In April, a DoorDash driver in Omaha received a call similar to the those outlined in the charges against Smith, according to a television news report posted on YouTube. The objective is to steal personal information to gain unauthorized access to digital accounts. Phishing can occur over the phone, via text, email or social media. “Fortunately, the Dasher caught on,” Dow noted, explaining that the driver was able to change his passwords and lock the scammer out of his accounts. This man was a scammer,” Dow said in the release. “Recently, in the Morro Bay area, a man called a DoorDasher claiming he was with ‘DoorDash IT.’ He said there was an issue and they needed the Dasher's login information. Law enforcement has been battling and tracking the type of scam Smith allegedly deployed for at least the last few years.Ĭalifornia District Attorney Dan Dow, whose district covers San Luis County, in December 2021 issued a statement warning delivery drivers about the phishing schemes. “This was an egregious and appalling crime and we stand ready to support law enforcement to ensure that justice is served,” according to a statement from DoorDash. These are unknown unknowns, meaning issues that the core players in the industry often times do not even know are impacting them.”ĭoorDash called the arrest an “appalling crime” and said it is cooperating with law enforcement. ![]() “We know that they do not have the right fraud detection capabilities in place, as is evident by the way Smith’s scam was ultimately uncovered. “It is hard to quantify this issue, but we believe that food delivery companies are losing much more money to fraud than they know,” Midtlyng said. Midtlyng said the FBI lists phishing as the most common type of fraud in the U.S., with over 300,000 victims and $52 million in financial losses in 2022 alone. “Situations like these are exactly why food delivery platforms need to implement strong account security methods.” “That is a huge problem and indicates that there are likely many more of these scams flying under the radar,” Midtlyng said. Police believe Smith scammed 700 DoorDash drivers through the scam, swiping nearly $1 million.Ī review by Ct Insider found the scheme deployed by Smith is not unique and has been used against delivery and rideshare drivers across the country, including in Nebraska, North Carolina, California, Texas and Arizona, according to media reports. ![]() Smith allegedly used personal information obtained through that phishing site to change the driver’s bank account and steal deposits. The drivers were then sent a link to their DoorDash account and told to enter their employee username and password to verify identity. He was charged with first-degree larceny, third-degree identity theft, two counts of second-degree forgery, trafficking in personal identifying information and first-degree computer crime.īeginning in June 2020, Smith allegedly deployed a phishing scheme in which he placed a DoorDash order and then calling or texted assigned drivers - using an application that mimicked DoorDash’s support number - to report a problem with the order and to tell them not to complete it. ![]() Some in the industry are even calling this the “scampocalypse.”’ĭavid Smith, 21, of Stamford, was arrested last week in Mount Vernon, N.Y., on charges stemming from an elaborate scam aimed at DoorDash drivers. “Because of this, driver accounts are much more valuable than customer accounts,” Midtlyng said. ![]()
